Rebecca Costa has managed to put together an extremely readable, thoughtful, well-researched challenge to her readers. She reminds us that evolution is not something that has only happened in the dim dark past, but is a continuing process that is active in all living things, including humans, right now!

She also reminds us that the human race, which has evolved over millions of years, is now faced with world problems which are daily becoming more and more complicated and that the normal rate of capability increase of the human brain has not been able to keep up with the exponential rise in problem complexity. As a result, today’s approach to a complex problem, in most cases after recognizing it, is to take the easy way out by treating the symptoms, instead of analyzing and attacking the basic cause, leaving the solution to future generations.

She points out, using failed highly developed civilizations of the relatively recent past as examples, that many of the causes of their failures are still with us. These problems are now of a complexity far beyond solution by normal, business as usual, thinking methods and capabilities, but she reminds us that it is still possible to avoid pushing them into the future.

Costa cites many examples of cases where we have the knowledge to solve problems, but do not have the conventional ability to implement that knowledge. She postulates that the recognition, and use of “insight” is a major step toward attaining that goal. To quote her, “The world needs new ideas, new ways to look at our growing threats, and new visionaries to speak up. To this end, The Watchman’s Rattle is merely a platform for society’s greatest talent to come forward”.

By far, the uniqueness of the book is that she presents her thoughts and facts in such a way that has the reader nodding and saying “you know, these are all logical, understandable, and things that I should have been thinking about”.  Maybe, if we are lucky, we will all be acting on her suggestions within our lifetimes and looking at the world a little bit differently.
